Walnut Creek City Council Advances Key Projects, Prepares for Summer Activities

Credit: City of Walnut Creek Website

As spring unfolds, Walnut Creek's City Manager, Dan Buckshi, announced an exciting lineup of community activities starting with the First Wednesday Street Fest. Returning today and set for another round in August, this vibrant tradition, held between 5:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. along Locust and Cypress Streets, showcases local artisans, craft vendors, and live performances.

Turning to city governance, the City Council's agenda for May includes fiscal reviews, particularly of Measure O's finances, and acknowledgment of National Police Week and Public Works Week. A noteworthy proposal from Toyota Walnut Creek is also up for discussion. Recent council achievements include the approval of new facilities at Heather Farm Park and sound regulation near the Planned Parenthood on Oakland Blvd.

The city also celebrated its dedicated employees, naming Matt Redmond from Public Works as Employee of the Year and recognizing the HR Recruiting Team as Team of the Year for their efforts in filling key city positions.

Additionally, the city is preparing for the Memorial Day event at Civic Park, featuring tributes to fallen heroes and performances by the Walnut Creek Concert Band. Residents are encouraged to participate by sharing their personal stories of loved ones who served.

Looking ahead, June will bring Pride Month celebrations organized by Arts + Rec, featuring a diverse range of activities including Yoga in the Park, Drag Queen Storytime, and a Family Pool Party, among others.

Moreover, the city and Contra Costa County are updating their Local Hazard Mitigation Plan, focusing on key risks like earthquakes, wildfires, and landslides, and seeking public feedback.

Lastly, the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce the return of the Art & Wine Festival at Heather Farm Park on the first weekend of June, promising a festive environment with a variety of entertainment options for the whole family.

Entry Error Leaves Acalanes Swim Team High and Dry Before Championships

Thirteen Acalanes High School swimmers face disqualification from the state championships due to a submission error with the entry system, Club Assistant. The swimmers and their coach, Brett Usinger, who missed the deadline due to system issues, are pleading with the North Coast Section for an exemption. Despite their appeal and the critical nature of the meet for college prospects and state qualifications, NCS has denied any exceptions, citing strict adherence to submission deadlines. Read More.
