8-Story Mixed-Use Building Approved for Downtown Walnut Creek
A major new development is moving forward in downtown Walnut Creek. The Planning Commission unanimously approved plans for an eight-story mixed-use building at 1532 Mount Diablo Boulevard, replacing an existing surface parking lot.
The project would bring 104 new homes, including 14 affordable units, along with ground-floor retail. At 89 feet tall, it would become the tallest building in Walnut Creek’s commercial corridor.
VICI Is Returning to Downtown Walnut Creek
VICI is officially coming home to Walnut Creek.
The popular women’s clothing boutique will open its new permanent Downtown Walnut Creek location on September 12 at 1366 N. Main St., next to Ananas Coffee.
The move marks a return to the city where VICI got its start. More recently, the boutique returned to Walnut Creek with a popular temporary store at Broadway Plaza during the 2025 holiday season.
This time, the return is permanent.
The new store will take over the former Paia Mercantile space along North Main Street, putting VICI right in the heart of downtown.
VICI has also announced a $250 gift card giveaway ahead of the opening. Locals can enter through VICI’s Instagram by tagging their shopping partner in the comments.

Ygnacio Valley Library Closing for Major Improvements
The Ygnacio Valley Library will temporarily close September 9 through approximately May 2027 for major facility upgrades.
Improvements include a new energy-efficient heating and cooling system, roof replacement, electrical upgrades and new lighting.
September 8 is the final day to pick up existing holds. After that, uncollected holds will be moved to the Downtown Walnut Creek Library at 1644 N. Broadway.
The Ygnacio Valley book drop and parking lot will also be closed during construction. Books can be borrowed and returned at other Contra Costa County Library locations, including Walnut Creek, Clayton, Concord and Pleasant Hill.
“The Nut” Debate Makes More Headlines
The debate over Walnut Creek’s newest nickname continues.
In a recent East Bay Times/Mercury News column, Walnut Creek native Martha Ross weighed in on “The Nut” — and shared some interesting history showing that Walnut Creek’s connection to nut-themed nicknames isn’t entirely new.
Ross recalled the old Civic Arts Theatre, which locals affectionately called “The Nuthouse,” along with King Walnut, the longtime mascot of the Walnut Festival Twilight Parade.
The article also featured Walnut Creek Spotlight founder Joey Trautner and the story behind our “The Nut” hats, which started as a small batch and have quickly taken off. At the Locust Street Festival in August, all 100 hats sold out.

Walnut Creek Wants Your Input
Walnut Creek residents have two opportunities this September to weigh in on the city’s future.
The City will host a Community Workshop on September 24 to gather input on the General Plan Update. Residents can also provide feedback on the City Council’s priorities for 2027 and 2028.
Looking ahead, Election Day is November 3. Walnut Creek voters will elect two City Councilmembers and a City Treasurer and vote on two local measures. Vote-by-mail ballots and official drop boxes will be available beginning October 5.
September is also National Preparedness Month, and residents are encouraged to review emergency plans, prepare supplies and sign up for local alerts.
